The Top 10 Fastest Kit Cars

Kit cars are a hobbyist's dream and the fact that they can also be blisteringly fast while remaining affordable has to be one of their major perks. Here are the 10 fastest kit cars of all time.

Ultima GTR720

This is a kit car which manages to produce enough power to out-accelerate a Ferrari Enzo, all for a base price of £16,000. This may sound cheap but enthusiasts argue that around £60,000 will build you a world-beating GTR720 good enough to outstrip a Koenigsegg CCX.

Caterham Superlight R500

A two litre engine producing 263bhp in a frame that weighs virtually nothing makes the R500 a blisteringly fast kit car, hitting 62 miles per hour in under three seconds for £41,000.

Created by Factory Five Racing with the intention of bringing supercar performance to the man on the street, engines of up to 7 litres can be fitted, enabling 515bhp and a 0-60 time of about 3.5 seconds.

Deco Rides Boattail Speedster

Possibly the most attractive kit car on the list, this can be equipped with a V10 engine from a Dodge Viper or a V8 alternative from a Maserati, giving it stunning performance to match its good looks.

Gardner Douglas

This is one of many kit cars to copy the AC Cobra and the Douglas definitely has a sting in its tail thanks to the six litre V6 engine which can just about squeeze beneath the hood.

SDR WR3 V-Storm

300bhp is at your disposal thanks to the monster turbo-charged engine from a Subaru Impreza which is fitted in this race-friendly kit car, pulling you to 62 miles an hour in three seconds from a standing start.

Parallel Designs Torero

Borrowing the good looks of a Lamborghini Diablo but at a budget price, the Torero can feature a V12 engine from BMW which gives it enough juice to come close to supercar performance, pumping out 400bhp. Stylish enough to fool the experts.

The Ford GT40 is often copied by kit car manufacturers and this particular edition is close to the top of the tree when it comes to performance. There will be a significant price tag for this 500bhp rocket, if only because you need to build the car to handle this incredible power.

FFR '33 Hot Rod

The second Factory Five Racing entry on this list and there could have been many more, is another sexy hot rod style kit car in the same league as the Boattail Speedster. 4.6 litres of power can be found under the hood, making it an excellent car for pure straight-line speed.

Aldino Kit Car

Aldino is not as well known as some of the other manufacturers on this list, but the fact that some owners have managed to build vehicles capable of hitting 60 in 2.8 seconds suggests that there is enough going on to make you sit up and take note.
